European Garden Heritage Network (EGHN)

In collaboration with the EU-funded European Garden Heritage Network (, the foundation has been taking the lead since 2003 to establish a European network for parks and gardens with further partners in England, France, the Netherlands, Belgium and North Rhine-Westphalia. The aim is to ensure the long-term preservation and development of parks and gardens and highlight their significance for the European regions.

The network unites garden enthusiasts, experts, authorities, foundations and tourist agencies alike. Together they aim to improve their marketing strategies and increase the attractiveness of their predominantly historical parks and garden landscapes, thereby inspiring and enticing more people towards them. Through this international collaboration, innovative measures and projects have been developed and implemented, further promoting sustainable regional development.

In North Rhine-Westphalia, the focus has so far been on the development of themed gardens in East Westphalia-Lippe, Münsterland, the Ruhr Area and the Rhineland. In the future, the expansion of the network to new partners and gardens will be complemented by an intensive marketing campaign and the development of tourist offers, such as day trips or longer stays.

The North Rhine-Westphalia project is actively supported by the two regional authorities Rhineland and Westphalia-Lippe, the Regionalverband Ruhr (Regional Organisation Ruhr) and the Nordrhein Westfalen Tourismus e.V. (North Rhine-Westphalia Tourism Registered Association). Alongside the EU, financial support is also provided by the Ministerium für Bauen und Verkehr (Ministry of Building and Transport) as well as the Ministerium für Wirtschaft, Mittelstand und Energie des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen (Ministry of Economics, Midsized Enterprises and Energy of the Federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia).
